Heavy Metal: SOFIA Tungsten Counterweights + P-3C Orion Propeller Cores
JET Shop releases are some of our favorites because they are unique and limited items that are a blast to work on. Joining the diverse cadre of JET Shop items are 2 of the heaviest chunks we've ever released: NASA SOFIA 737SP Tungsten Balance/Counterweights and P-3C Orion Propeller Cores.
The SOFIA Tungsten weights were removed from flight control surfaces included in our SOFIA parts lot from NASA Ames. Tungsten is one of the densest metals on Earth and replaced depleted uranium as balance/counterweights in large aircraft. If you dabble in the scrap metal world you know that Tungsten values are at record highs, making these SOFIA bits the most costly and rare raw material items we’ve ever released. These come on a stand featuring the original BVR SOFIA art from our first SOFIA Rudder Tab release. The resin stand is also laser etched on the back with a blueprint and info about the SOFIA program. We only made 49. Easter Egg ALERT: Exactly 7 SOFIA XL Tungsten Weights are available that are 3X larger than the plates pictured. These will come on a stand similar to the one pictured for the standard weights.
The P-3C Orion Propeller Cores come courtesy of propellers we worked on for a custom project. They vary in thickness, with some up to .6” thick, and feature a polished edge with planform art etched on BOTH sides. These also come with a black resin printed stand. Only 28 P-3C Propeller Cores were made.
NOTE: Most Propeller Cores are red and/or white. Several are raw aluminum with bits of white paint.
